What is VNTR's and RFLP? Also what are they used for in genetic technology?

VNTR means: Variable number of tandem repeats; is a polimorfism where alleles of a chromosome are differents for number of repetitions.
RLFP involve restriction sites; a mutation can alter a restriction site or insertion of a deletion of a DNA fragment can generate restriction fragment of variable lenght; these fragments are called RFLP.

VNTR's are used for example for person-identification or identification of a biological child of a mother.

RFLP (not RLFP) are used for disease investigation --> sickle cell anemia and disease of Duchenne are for example examined based on a RFLP

RFLP stands for restriction fragment length polymorphism.when restrictases cut strands the length of the fragments produced are characteristic of the strand.SNPs(single nucleotide polymorphism)and other mutations can change the length as they alter the cuttin' sites for restrictases.rflp can be used for genetic diagnosis of diseases .
