Hermaphrodite ReproductionHi everyone!
During a conversation I was having with a few classmates, the question of a human hermaphrodite impregnating his/herself came up. With minimal research we came to the conclusion that it would be exceedingly rare- the wiki on true hermaphroditism even states that "although fertility is possible in true hermaphrodites (as of 2008 there have been at least 11 reported cases of fertility in true hermaphrodite humans in scientific literature),[2] there has yet to be a documented case where both gonadal tissues function; contrary to folk rumors of hermaphrodites being able to impregnate themselves." This leads us to believe that the chances of an individual with two fully developed, functioning sets of sex organs existing is rare at best. Moving on, however, we were stuck as to what term would be used for an individual who could (theoretically/hypothetically, of course) impregnate themselves. Would asexual be correct, in the same way that certain jellyfish are asexual? Or is there another classification for this situation? Thank you!
