What was the evolutionary significance of jointed appendages?

you'd walk stiffly if your appendages were't jointed, it would also make it hard to run, climb or swim.

Jointed Appendages

I too have the same question "What is the evolutionary significance of jointed appendages?".. but I need a bit more detail than just "it allows you not to walk stiffly".. because the question in my paper carries 3 marks and i must be able to write more than that. :?:
