Can someone please help me out with Lamark's and other prior evolutionist's theory of Scala naturae, and perhaps the diffrences between Lamark's and Darwin's views on timespan's of organism's evolving in respect to higer vs. lower species.

I think Linnaeus started the scala naturae and Lamarck kind of expanded on it with a lot of invertebrate classification stuff. He had something to do with the beginnings of cell theory too, but he gets busted on a lot for stating that aquired traits are inherited. I remember one example was that a giraffe has a long neck because it strains it to reach leaves, so the giraffe consciously made it's neck longer and this was passed down to it's succesive generations.
