How does DNA methylation occur- is there an enzyme that carries out the methylation? How is it regulated?

They are called DNA methyltransferases. Look them up...

Thanks- this is really interesting. I couldn't though find a good definition of hemimethylated by doing a Google search. Do you happen to know of somewhere where I could find the definition?

Basically, it's when only one strand of double-stranded DNA is methylated.
