Who coined Biodiversity?

I remember a time, not too long ago, when biology of systems and collections of animals and plants was referred to as ecology. Now we seem to be using the word "biodiversity" for basically the same study and subject. I can see the usefulness of the term biodiversity, because it implies a need a save the many individual species. And I suppose there is a political value in the unquestionable association of ecosystem health with saving all of the individual species.
Does anyone have a good history of this movement which can identify the first few uses of the term and how it came to supremecy over the terms ecology and ecosystem?
