Effect of low temperature on smooth muscle

Hello all, need some help here.
I have a question that asked for explanation on effect of low temperature(3 degree celsius) on smooth muscle in vitro. I broke them down in parts and I just can't find any physiological explanation for smooth muscle going into some sort of spasm after initial contact with cold water before resuming contraction albeit at a lower frequency and amplitude. Can anyone point me to some paper or explanation!
