Hundreds or thousands of years - so science fiction rathe than science. You imagine what people will do - nice - explains the catchy terms and the melodramatic "if we don't wipe ourselves out first" and i esp like the hang on to your hat.
But do drop the "we", whatever it is it will be they and you'll be noprt of it.

Science fiction? Like men on the moon and that sort of nonsense?

Where do you think the process of gene redesign will take us in a few hundred years?

@JorgeLobo: Can't acquired characters not influence evolution in any way? By altering the environment an organism adapts to? Nothing immediate, and I can't imagine on the scale Rap is talking about...
