Fisher's theorem of natural selection

I was going through Fisher's theorem of natural selection

It says that the growth rate is equivalent to fitness, but I don't understand why.

Could you explain about this please?

and does it matter whether the cells (that Fisher's theorem is going to be applied) are haploid or diploid?

Because the better fitness, the faster can cells grow ;)
