ATP Synthesis

QUESTION: Why do organisms need to perform their ATP synthesis in the presence of a membrane?

ATTEMPT: Is it because ATP synthase is the molecular machine that synthesises ATP in your body and it is also powered by chemiosmosis.

You are on the right track but you still need to explain why the membrane is important for the ATP synthase and the chemiosomosis. Think about gradient formation.
