Why are sponges considered animals?

The colony-like properties have proven, through experimentation, that each individual sponge cell is able to function and survive independently. They are multicellular.

The teacher said I need to look up a few basics concepts that apply as well.

you mean Porifera, right?
Probably because they have the same cell composition as other animals.
