About peppermint

Hello I'm matt, I have sown peppermint seeds in my garden last year maybe the only stuff I've sown in my all life.
I have read that we aren't sure about mentha x piperita origin and that it was an hybrid giving no fertile seeds so I supposed it's cropped through vegetative means, so where do my fertile seeds I sowed last year come from?
And why now did I get some plants with pubescent leaves and some others though as tall without any down. are there male and female?
