Ultimate survivalIn 2007 I suggested why a 'god gene' could have arisen by Natural Selection. I now think that something much stronger than that had already been in place since the very beginning of life.
The 'raison d'être' of a replicator is to survive and make copies of itself. DNA is our onboard replicator. Governed by this replicator, it is of no surprise that we are strongly driven to survive. Once the human brain became capable of thinking about the past, present and the future, our own limited survival became apparent. Subservient to DNA's survival drives, thinking the impossible - everlasting survival - would have been easy for homo sapiens. There is no need to postulate the presence of a 'god gene' for this type of belief to have occurred.
