Biology QuestionsHi!
I just found this site from Googling, since I have a few questions about biology. If you could answer these, I'd really appreciate it as I haven't been able to answer these myself (and with Google). 1. My textbook says that "when organic compounds react to form products with lower energy, such as inorganic compounds, energy is released." What is a high or low energy compound? What is the difference between them? 2. In anaerobic cellular respiration in human muscle cells, lactate is produced. How is lactate different from lactic acid? The explanations I found over the internet were unclear and mixed one with the other. 3. With alcohol fermentation (anaerobic respiration in yeasts?), is ethanol the only alcohol produced? 4. According to my textbook, "adenoviruses / DNA viruses replicate in the infected cell's cytoplasm". Is this correct? Or do they replicate in the nucleus of the cell? 5. Also, the book states that the effect of adenoviruses only last for a single cell's lifetime, as they do not integrate with the cell's DNA and therefore do not replicate during mitosis and meiosis. However, Wikipedia (with sources) says something different: "The adenovirus life cycle <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biological_life_cycle> is separated, by the DNA replication <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA_replication> process, into two phases: an early and a late phase. In both phases, aprimary transcript <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primary_transcript> that is alternatively spliced <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_splicing> to generate monocistronic mRNAs <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monocistronic_mRNA> compatible with the host's ribosome <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ribosome> is generated, allowing for the products to be translated <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Translation_(genetics)> ." <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adenoviridae> " Which is correct? Thank you in advance!
1. In short and from a biological point of view, a highly reduced compound. They will then be oxydized with energy release.
2. One is the complementary base of the other. Lactate is C3H5O3- and a cation (generally H30+, but Na+ would be as good) 4. This is correct 5. Those 2 things are not contradictory. What do you see as such? Patrick
