measuring action potential outside of neuron

Postby alirosadi » Sat Mar 26, 2011 7:05 am

hi, i'm a new member, i'm interested in biology as well as others in this forum,
well, i want to ask about the measuring of action potential in neuron cell, often we measure the potential membrane by electrode in the intracellular compartment. in normal condition(no transmit impulse) ,potential membrane measured about -70 mV.
One day, mo college ask me about this topic certainly, how about the the result if we try to measure this potential membrane with condition the both of electrode put together at outside of neuron (extracellular part). Is it make different to the result and the curve?
I'd like to prove it by myself by experiment if i have the equipment to do it, but even i haven't prove by experiment at normal measurement.then i just want to ask you all,if you have answer about this.
thanks, for your responsibility and appreciation.:)

It will measure 0 mV, because the ion concentration will be the same at both electrodes.
