How does the decomposition of organic matter affect soil pH

hey people,
im doing my coursework
so far all i know is the decomposition of organic matter lowers the soil pH but how?
is it the release of free radicals or proton donars?
or H ions or whatever?

I would guess release of organic acids like huminic acids
