Can anyone identify this???

I found this when I was a kid about 40 years ago. I had someone I work with tell me it was some kind of animal baculum. I've searched the internet and can't find anything that looks like it. It appears to be a bone, but I'm not even sure about that. It looks like bone in the middle and then something wrapped spirally around it. Anyone have any ideas?
