Can anyone help me think of a project?

Postby waterprince2 » Sun Feb 06, 2011 2:13 am

Hey guys well the last few weeks I have studied photorespiration quite a deal and I need to come up with a project involving photorespiration that involves a scientific proposal and question I am supossed to answer. I am also supposed to conduct this at my school over the next year or so. Does anyone have any ideas of a project that is about photorespiration? I was thinking about tracking two similar types of species placing them under different conditions and recording their levels of photorrespiration but that seems kind of lame so I was wondering if anyone else has any ideas they can offer me. Thanks in advance

I think that's not that bad idea. You could compare e.g. C3, C4 and CAM plants.

Because I have to conduct this experiment in school I have decided to grow a variety of a bean plant in three different containers and track its photorespiration. Does anyone have any ideas for what I should include in the experimental group? What factors should I change and weigh in on in relation to photorespiration

it would be fine to change levels of CO2 and O2, but I don't think you would be able to do that.

But if you used e.g. bean and corn (C4) at different temperatures, that could be interesting. Maybe ligth intensity (that should influence stomata openings) or water availability.

thats sounds like a great idea jackbean thanks but if you dont mind I still have two questions left
Is there any chemical or item I could buy or my high school could get that would allow me to measure the rate of photorespiration? and the other question is if I conduct the corn and beans experiment could I extract any results that is not already a really well known fact and that I could base the project on?
Thanks for your help by the way I really appreciate it.

sorry, but I'm not experienced with that. You should look into some papers, how is the photoperspiration measured.

You probably won't be able to detect anything new, unless you have some experienced supervisor, who knows, what to look for.

Do you like to study photorespiration of plants under stress conditions? Say under the stress of added Cr in the soil?
May see this link. http://knol.google.com/k/suvarna/chromi ... 1lxcn2.14#

Thanks,
DMR Sekhar.

Are you sure you know what photorespiration is?

I only ask because I never learned about it in school (unless school means someting other than graad 1-12.)

It is the chain of reactions that recycle the carbon lost to the calvin cycle by the oxigenation of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate instead of the carboxylation of it.

One way could be to remove all the CO2 from the air with Potassium superoxide and measuring the levels of the reagents in the calvin cycle.
