PCR - clarification requested please!

Postby Julie5 » Sat Oct 23, 2010 6:02 pm

Hi, I'm just trying to get my head around PCR. Have I understood it correctly? PCR enables researchers to generate (quickly and cheaply) large numbers of copies of particular gene fragments, BUT it does NOT sequence those fragments? Is that right? Or have I got myself into a twist?

Many thanks for any clarification. (Biochem/genomics is HARD when you're only a biologist!) :)

Julie.

Yep. you do not know the sequence. However since you know how your fragment start (you defined the primers) it is easy to sequence the product, just use one of your amplification primer as a sequencing primer.
