DuPont ordered to pay EPA for cleanup
DuPont Co. may have to pay the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency $1.4 million to cover the agency's costs for supervising cleanup of two Newport landfills, under a ruling by a federal appeals court in Philadelphia.

In a decision released Thursday, a divided 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said the agency can recover costs for supervising the company's cleanup of a Superfund hazardous waste site. The court based its decision on the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act of 1980.

In 2002, DuPont completed a $42 million cleanup of the 120-acre site along the Christina River in Newport where the company had for years disposed of waste from a nearby pigment manufacturing plant. Runoff from the site containing lead, cadmium, zinc and other toxic metals leached into the river and adjacent wetlands, creating what was once considered among the nation's worst toxic waste sites.

DuPont removed more than 57,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediments from the Christina. It also created 1.5 acres of wetlands by removing 20,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil. And at one of the landfills, DuPont installed a barrier wall and capture system that filters ground water before it enters the wetlands. The site now houses a paint pigment facility, two industrial landfills, a baseball field, and two wetland areas, according to the EPA Web site.

At issue in Thursday's ruling was whether the agency could collect nearly $1.4 million from DuPont for overseeing the company's restoration effort.

you sure seem to have a lot of time on your hands. i would assume you would be too busy caring for your pet fish, playing your fiddle , and knitting socks for the homeless to moniter this or any forum regarding this matter. i issued you a challenge to visit with me and offered you access to my medical records as well as an opportunity to attend future doctors appointments in an attempt to get you to put up or shut up so to speak. as far as i know you never directly responded to this challenge. i understand that you no longer reside here in the great state of georgia but i believe that you have family in or around the metro area. i can clearly see that you are a loving compassionate soul and would probably make every effort to be with family for the holiday season. god , i can picture it in my head, all the biones gathered around the fireplace singing christmas caroles. it sure does warm my heart sarah. i have no doubt that the rest of the bione clan is as caring as you with that in mind, i would love the opportunity to visit with ma and pa bione. maybe i could share my delusional story with them, and they in turn could sympathetically suggest that i'm simply crazy as a betsy bug . then we could all eat some banana puddin and wait up for that ultimate american delusion ..... jolly old st nick. what do ya say old girl.... is it a date? i can even bring the pudding since i'm not contagious and my house isn't contaminated. this is your chance to put up sarah, otherwise take a hike!

HI ALL, sometimes this am I awakened and thought that something was crawling out of my ankle again, it was only the sheet touching my ankle because now I absolutely have to lie in a horizontal position with my feet elevated for the CHF...I was sooo terrified though...someone tried to get me to go public but I refused...and if any of you think that I'm a coward, then so be it...but I have lived through f-i-v-e of the most horrible months in my life. AND I'm not discounting or minimizing what anyone else has gone through, and I'm not even saying that I'm cured (still on antibiotics) but I needed a break from this madness if only for a little while. And I do not want to lose my home, or my means to support myself because I do work in a hospital (by going public). But to me I was a soldier while in both hospitals and I represented the cause well but so many doctors in Emory were on me that's how I knew they knew too but wanted me to think I was crazy...the USA definitely is creating it's own downfall with cover-ups and demoralizing healthcare system...this is one of the few countries that keep patients 80 years old and up on ventilators/respirators. And I feel it's strictly for monetary reasons in most cases but I say this

A particular example is the possible similarity between scientific theory building and delusional thought. This can be understood using Bentall's (1990) analysis of how normal and by extrapolation pathological belief systems develop.

Most beliefs can be said to be established as a result of drawing inferences from some perceived data in the outside world. The belief is then normally subject to a further stage of information search in which additional data collection might refute or confirm it.

According to Bentall in the deluded psychotic there can be abnormalities at one or more of these stages for example: the patient misperceives the data in the first place or forms the wrong inference.

Either way, he or she gets caught in a self fulfilling cognitive loop of confirmation bias. The person only attends to select out for notice those data that corroborate and hence progressively strengthen the belief.

As Chadwick (1992) observes, scientific thinking could be said to proceed in the same way!

Chadwick lists a number of similarities: the thought is held with great conviction and the person can hardly ever be argued out of it.
Talking about it causes considerable emotion to be expressed, especially anger at others failure to accept the ideas proposed.

There are other "paranoid" reactions like grandiosity and tenacious hold on the theory (delusion) despite evidential dis-conformation and so on.

Of course there are as Chadwick admits many differences among which are the fact that the scientific hypothesis generally does have a more plausible less person centered referent in the outside world (....)
