Will filtration sterilize the water sample

Postby utenachan » Thu Jul 08, 2010 12:39 am

We want to sterilize the water using membrane filtration. If we assume that the 0.45-um pore size is a perfect size cut off. All particles larger than 0.45 um are retained, while all particles smaller than 0.45 um pass through. Indicate whether or not filtration will sterilize the water sample if the microorganisms in the water includes Pfisteria piscicida,
Hepatitis A, Vibrio cholerae, Giardia lamblia, E. coli, oomycetes, and Gonyaulax catanella.

I do not know how to calculate the size for each particle. Can anyone please show me one example in detail?

No need to calculate, go on wikipedia or use your favourite textbook for the size of the different species, and check if they will go through the filter or not.

Hmmm, Some are on it, for other I suggest you use google or your favorite search engine. Keywords like "<species name> size" should work.

That complicated.
