identify growth on tree

Postby mpictor » Sun Jun 13, 2010 1:37 am

I found a fuzzy pink growth on a small sassafras tree outside my house. At first, I just thought that sassafras had really strange flowers, but google set me straight on that.

I decided it was a fungus, but I've never seen anything like it. I asked a mushroom expert in the region if he knew what it was, and so far he hasn't been able to figure it out.

The stem is much thicker at this growth than it is elsewhere.

This is in southern indiana.
