What kind of Spider is this?

Postby IceHot » Thu Jun 10, 2010 11:51 pm

This is a web photo I found that matches a spider I found on our front porch near our front door. I live in West Central Florida's nature coast in a semi-rural subdivision of pines, scrub oaks, hills and more empty 1/2 acre lots than there are houses. He was munching on a moth's wing when I found him, evidently doing a great job at reducing our insect population. He is about 1/2 centimeter across, and raises his rear end as he becomes disturbed. The white dots on his rear are striking and obvious. The colorful "fangs" (sorry, I'm not a scientist but they look like fangs) are a shade somewhere between blue and green, and my Cub Scout son and I have decided they are aqua-marine in color, but at any rate they are beautiful. After researching as best as we could, we decided it was not one of the poisonous spiders common in Florida, as those spiders have plenty of pictures on the internet for us to compare to. So, we found it a very nice home on the front porch of the empty house next door, one that has fewer visits from Terminex and an all night porch light to attract plenty of victims.

It might be a variant of this:

This might fit, too, but I can't find a "radar spider" reference.
