Project... working with blood.

Postby Fleetwood » Sun Jan 10, 2010 11:14 pm

Hello, new to the forums here.

I am currently exploring ideas for a college design project. Ultimately what will be made is what is known as a MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical-System) device. This device will be at the end of a probe that is stuck into a blood vein. With the device inside of the vein, various measurements can be taken concerning the properties of the blood.

I have limited knowledge in this field. I would like to know what readings other than pressure, flow and temperature can be measured.

As soon as this device is inserted into the blood stream it will instantly be taking measurements. I would really like the device to improve on a current blood measurement procedure by vastly decreasing the amount of time it takes to get the reading. I'm sure there are other things that is measured in the blood, however I know nothing!

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated, thanks!

Detection of various molecules eg.cortisol(stress), heavy metals, glucose levels will probably be more important than increasing speed of current detection. If you want a real challenge, try to improve the current design of glucose sensor. However even a temperature sensor can be quite complicated if you want to make it so it's not powered externally, transmits information wirelessly and small enough to not damage the body when moving.
