Black bubbly burn-like residue left on bottom of tree.

Black bubbly burn-like residue left on bottom of tree. My thought was a lightning strike, any ideas? No crack in the tree or anything, definitely looks like a burn. Almost looks like coal, definitely carbon.

Any thoughts and ideas would be great! Just want to figure this out.
