There are entire ecosystems centred around dead whales. A whale carcass is so enormous that it provides food for a wide range of deep sea animals for several years.

Whales eat krill, and no doubt keep krill numbers under control. However, it is worth remembering that whale numbers are so low now, compared to what they were before people started killing them, that their role in any ecology is sharply reduced.
