Suitable Fat Solvents.

Postby seonaidh » Wed Dec 02, 2009 10:34 am

This is actually regarding a Chemistry investigation, but even after lots of searching I have been unable to find a suitable solvent..

I require a solvent to dissolve animal fats contained in dog foods that is easily accessible and not to costly. As I am doing this through school I also need it to be pretty safe as I will be working around younger (and somewhat sillier) students. Any suggestions on solvents or where to find them?

Thanks!

What solvents have you tried? Seems like any hydrophilic solvent would do -- IPA, EtOH, Acetone, hexane etc.

The question is, whether you wish to use the food afterwards...

If you want a suitable fat solvent you would require it to be the opposite of hydrophilic which means it must be lipophilic (Aka 'loves fats') or hydrophobic (hates water).

Virtually the two are the same thing.
