Why does muscle atrophy?I think i can guess why this happens, but i'd like a profesional opinion: why exactly does muscle atrophy when not used for a long time (for example, in a comatose patient)?

The muscles (as anything in living organisms) is not static, instead, it is all the time broken down and re-build again. If you have no need to build muscles, why should you spent energy for that?
