meiosis in the production of gametes ...

can some one explain me the role of meiosis in the production of gametes and genetic variation through recombination of alleles and genes including independent assortment and crossing over (the details of the stages of meiosis are not required)

There are a couple of schematic drawings; one simplified and one more detailed. I'm quite certain they can enlighten you more than a description of the event here without any illustartions. Naturally, check out their respective chapters in the text as well.

meiosis actually produces the gametes, themselves, and is essential for reproduction. Crossing is the exchange of genetic material between homologous chromosomes, and allows for genetic diversity.
