chicken pox antibodies

Postby raneynickel » Sat Aug 08, 2009 12:51 am

Why are chicken pox antibodies not shared by the mother during pregnancy via passive immunity? Or are they? If so, why are they not effective in blocking this disease?

As far as I know, all antibodies are shared between mother and infants. However, only the antibodies are shared, and their life is limited, so the mother's immunity is not transfered in a stable manner to the kid. So they need to be vaccinated later.

I'll to look up my immunology notes when I get back home, but I think remember that only the one-unit antibody (IgG) cross the placenta, not IgM and IgA. I think it may be possible that the antibody is IgM, case in which it won't cross. If my memory is correct then IgA won't cross either, but that passes into milk so the baby will get by that route.

it is just that after sometime they are no longer useful and are excreted by the baby and hence it needs vaccination
it isn't what you do that matters but it is how you do it
