Help! I am in a digestive crisis! So, if anyone has a list of all (or most) of the digestive enzymes and their functions is relatively laymanic language it would mean the world to me. Well, more so just my biology grade BUT it will also further my understanding of the amazing human body.
If you'd like to throw in any helpful digestive system links that's be well appreciated as well. Thanks!
Re: Help! I am in a digestive crisis!Carbohydrate Enzymes
Salivary Amylase (ptyalin) - made in the salivary glands, functions in mouth to hydrolyze (break down) starch to maltose (disaccharide) Pancreatic Amylase - made in the pancreas, functions in the small intestine to hydrolyze starch to maltose Maltase - made in the intestinal glands, functions in the small intestine to hydrolyze maltose to two glucose molecules Sucrase - made in the intestinal gland, functions in the small intestine to break sucrose to glucose and fructose Lactase - made in intestinal gland, functions in small intestine to break lactose to glucose and galactose Protein Enzymes Pepsin (secreted as pepsinogen) - made in gastric glands, functions in the stomach to break peptide bonds Trypsin (secreted as trypsinogen) - made in pancreas, functions in the small intestine to break specific peptide bonds and converts chymotrypsinogen to chymotrypsin Chymotrypsin (secreted as chymotrypsinogen) - made in pancreas, functions in small intestine to break peptide bonds Carboxypeptidase - made in the pancrease, functions in small intestine to break terminal peptide bonds at carboxyl end Aminopeptidase - made in intestinal glands, functions in small intestine to hydrolyze terminal peptide bond at the amino end Dipeptidases - made in intestinal glands, functions in the small intestine to hydrolyze pairs of amino acids Enterokinase - made in intestinal glands, functions in the small intestine to convert trypsinogen to trypsin Lipid Enzymes Bile (not an enzyme) - made in the liver, functions in the small intestine to emulsify fats Lipase - made in the pancreas, functions in the small intestine to hydrolyze lipids
