Question about Apoptosis

Hi all, I was reading about apoptosis, and I'm confused. Do perforins kill the cell, or does it send a signal and tell the cell to kill itself?

And what is the difference between apoptosis and lysis? I'm a first year biology student, so if you can explain this is simple terms, that'd be great!

well, I know that apoptosis is programmed cell death, whereas lysis is the breaking or destruction of a cell
