Do the staminate flowers of Quercus sp. ever form petals?

Postby Coaster » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:27 am

Hello botany forum. This is my first post and I have what I hope is an easy question for a knowledgeable student/professional.

The staminate flowers of Quercus alba (white oak) feature five or six sepals but apparently no petals.

I'm wondering, do the staminate flowers of Quercus alba (or any Quercus species) feature petals at any point during their development? For instance, are petals possibly there during development, but then absorbed?

Thanks for any info!

Looks like no petals:

See page 143. Look at item G. That's a floral diagram for the family. Co 0 means Corollas 0 - no petals.
