Why is 'gel electrophoresis' important for deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) testing in criminal cases?

Not exactly sure, but I think gel electrophoresis is a method of obtaining like a DNA map. So, if you look at it from the stance of law/justice, it could be to determine if a certain piece of evidence is linked to a certain suspect, etc.
