Model marine organisms

Postby DIWalker » Tue Feb 17, 2009 9:57 am

I am researching the biodiversity of marine biofilms forming in oceanographic sensors. Currently I am investigating suitable DNA extraction techniques that I can use to isolate DNA from organisms of all 3 taxonomic domains. To do this I am planning on using model organisms and comparing the amount and quality of DNA that each extraction gives me for those organisms.

Does anybody know where I can obtain some pure cultures of the following:

Gram negative marine bacteria
Gram positive marine bacteria
Marine archaea
Marine fungi

It doesn't really matter what species they are as long as they can be cultured relatively easily. Any help would be very much appreciated.

ATCC would be my first bet if you are in the US. Pick your species, and they are likely to have a pure culture to sell and the growth conditions on their website.
