Question on chromosomes

At which points during mitosis do you have have 23 pairs(46 individual) and 92 individual? I'm confused as to when they pair up, and when they stay as individuals. Diagrams only ever show, two or three pairs in examples, so it's hard to tell. And mitosis only ever happens in diploid cells right? Thanks for any help!

during the G1 phase, say that there are 46 chromosomes (the chromatins haven't condense),in the S phase of interphase the DNA is duplicated and later in prophase, when chromosomes are formed there'll be a double number of DNA --each chromosome is duplicated and each forms 2 chromatids; it becomes the X-shape like thing, well let's assume this as 92 chromosomes now. Each chromatid from each chromosome will be distributed later in the next phase of mitosis to the daughter cells. Then, there'll be 46 chromosomes back in the daughter cells.

well, i used to find it difficult too to understand the divisions of cells, read it over and over, then you'll get it.
