PreAP Biology homework help-on cellular resp, photosynthesis

Postby BiologyStudent » Mon Nov 24, 2008 4:14 pm

My grade is an 89% right now so I really need to get it together. (This is a hard class to take as a 9th grader.) I have put effort into my homework but want to make sure my answer are right - here are some I'm not sure of. (I have looked all through the textbook.)

Any help, maybe on just one or two, is highly appreciated! :)

Think of two other events or circumstances that may have an affect on the rate of photosynthesis?
-I put global warming, and I'm not certain that is right. I also need help thinking of another.

What kinds of factors can affect how well an enzyme works in a reaction?
-Maybe the temperature?

What do the terms aerobic and anaerobic mean?
aerobic-low intensity anaerobic-high intensity

Overall, where do photosynthesis and cellular respiration take place?
-chlorophyll?

For each step of cellular respiration identify the inputs and outputs?
-Also had one like this for photosynthesis. I know the inputs and outputs, but don't understand the "each step" part. What does it mean by the stages/steps?

When does pyruvate form?
-I know that it is the end product of glycosis. So would the answer be- during glycosis?

What happens to energy in a chemical reaction? (sometimes lost in what form?)
-It is converted and sometimes lost as heat.

What kinds of organisms do cellular respiration?
-animals

Where does oxygen gas come from in photosynthesis?
-carbon dioxide

What type of organic molecule are enzymes?
-protein

What is the source of energy for the reaction photosynthesis to occur?
-ATP

Where is glucose (sugar) made in the calvin cycle of photosynthesis?
-No idea on this one.

Where do plants get their carbon from?
-oxygen gas

Which ones carry out photosynthesis and which carry out cellular resp?
water; pig; plants; algae; grass; animals; fungi; air; brain cells; sweat
---I put pig, animals, and brain cells as cellular resp. Plants and algae as photosynthesis

Which is correct about photosynthesis?
changes chemical energy to food energy
changes energy of motion to chemical energy
makes chemical energy from carbon dioxide and water
*****changes light energy into chemical energy

Function + location of photosynthesis and cellular resp?
-No ideas for this.

I had over 100 questions, these were just the ones I'm unsure of. I really need to get a good grade on the next test (tomorrow). Please help me out!! Thanks in advance! :D

A few pointers

-Photosynthetic rate
I think they're looking for local variables here...basically if you can relate it back to the photosynthesis reaction it's applicable...

-enzyme efficiency
Think of body homeostasis, what factors are the body/cell balancing?

-aerobic vs anaerobic
Look up the definitions, has nothing to do with intensity.

-photosynth location
chlorophyll is a molecule not a location

-plant carbon source
You can't get carbon from oxygen. That's called alchemy.

You're looking at a failing grade if you don't read the book more, because it seems like you really don't understand the material. A 89% means nothing if you don't feel comfortable with the material. Not to discourage you or anything but there's a big transition from elementary school to high school. You're going to be frustrated and angry because things will always be unfair, you might get horribly untrained teachers, you might have terrible textbooks and insane tests that cover stuff you don't think was introduced in class. I wish you the best of luck and hope you soldier on. I'd suggest reading up on each of the topics at wikipedia or just googling for .edu webpages about these topics.

Ummm, not to be rude or anything but I do know the material. These were the only things that I wasn't positive about the answer on. Obviously I do know the majority of the material and I'm trying to get help on here so that I understand the rest. If I took the test now I'd probably get a C+, but obviously I'm going to do a lot of studying between now and then. I wouldn't be on here if I was prepared for the test now.

I think you were lying about the 89%. Stop being lazy and do your own book learning like the rest of us do.

I don't care what you think. These are my questions over the ENTIRE CHAPTER. And fyi, I tried on all of them and was asking for help. And 89% is terrible, if I was going to lie I would've said I had an A.

89 is terrible...OH PLEASE. That is an A- which is a good mark. I am a biology major and if I got marks like that I would be more than pleased, but really I don't get how you are getting a 89 if you don't know what aerobic and anaerobic means, I learned that in grade 10.

I apologize for ripping you but really, take the time and read your text and google it, these are straightforward questions, you shouldn't be having any difficulties with it.

...right here is an example that makes me doubt the education system.

Point made. I'm in grade 9, you learned that in grade 10. I'm a Freshman in HIGH SCHOOL, and I'm being treated as if I'm stupid because I don't know the answer to my question. And an 89 is a B+, I need an A.

Since when having a 89 is a B+? Where are you from?

And really you are in grade 9?

Well, you gotta do what I did in grade 9... READ!!!

Missouri, United States
100-97 A+
96-93 A
92-90 A-
89-97 B+

Etc, etc. Yes, grade 9 means I'm a Freshman in High School.

Think about how photosynthesis works.
http://www.phschool.com/science/biology ... rview.html

How could you break this?

What kinds of factors can affect how well an enzyme works in a reaction?
-Maybe the temperature?

Thats one, what else...
http://www.rsc.org/education/teachers/l ... nzymes.htm

What do the terms aerobic and anaerobic mean?
aerobic-low intensity anaerobic-high intensity

You can just look this up easy.
Aerobic has to do with oxygen. You look up the other.

Overall, where do photosynthesis and cellular respiration take place?
-chlorophyll?

What's that big green flappy thing?

When does pyruvate form?
-I know that it is the end product of glycosis. So would the answer be- during glycosis

That sounds about right, but think in more detail, what happens to the pyruvate?

What kinds of organisms do cellular respiration?
-animals

What about plants? Remember, plants make sugars, how do they use the sugars?

Where does oxygen gas come from in photosynthesis?
-carbon dioxide

Nope... Look here.
http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/sci ... erview.gif

What is the source of energy for the reaction photosynthesis to occur?
-ATP

Nope. See above link.

Where do plants get their carbon from?
-oxygen gas

Think of the chemical formula for oxygen gas. O2, do you see carbon there?

Well, thats a couple...
