Comparison of NAD and FAD?

Postby sundew773 » Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:22 pm

I know both NAD and FAD are created in the Citric Acid (Krebs) cylce, but I am asked to compare them as well as state which one has a more negative redox potential when reduced.

I am quite sure NAD has a more negative redox potential as I know NADH+ is worth more ATP than FADH2. But can anyone tell me for sure, or give any other comparison between the two? Not finding much here in my text...

Thank you!

I belive that NADH is worth 3 ATP, and FADH2 is worth 2, they get transfered to ATP in the chemiosmosis stage. I'm pretty sure that NAD+ has more electronegativity FAD+ but my teacher didn't really discuss that, just that oxygen is the most electronegative element, (which I know isn't true, it's Flourine but she didn't like it when I corrected her)

Flourine is a nonstarter in a biological system. Its extremely toxic and nasty in the extreme. If you got Flourine floating around in your system, you aren't worrying about which is most electronegative cause you'll be a corpse.

yup. that much I knew, but my proff said that oxygen was the most electronegative element. Anyhow... I think that the comparison I made earlier was correct
