Yellowjackets - Nocturnal?

Postby Sydney » Mon Sep 22, 2008 4:57 pm

I always assumed that yellowjackets return to their nests after dark but the other morning around 4:00 am I went to let my dog out and they were swarming. I would have to guess that the porch light triggered the swarm but I always get up around this time to let the dog out and it had not happened before. Also, there were what looked like paper wasps mixed in the swarm. I called pest control and they came out and found the nest which was about 10 feet away under a bush and it was massive. Has anyone seen anything like this?

One last thing, does anyone know what the yellowjacket queen looks like? Before they came to destroy the nest I was watching it (with binoculars) and saw a very large, mostly black with yellow stripes insect hovering around the nests entrance. It eventually went in so it must be part of the nest.

Just when you though it was safe to go out at night......
