Re: Dangerous ProtozoaNaegleria fowleri are thermophelic amoebae. They enter through the nasal passage and then infect the CNS of those who may dive into or swim in warm fresh waters, such as shallow lakes, ponds, some streams and rivers and poorly treated swimming pools. They are usually quite prolific when water temps. exceed 80°F. and quite deadly, causing painful death sometimes, within 72 hrs., the infection is usually considered 100% fatal. Out of 300 cases, only five people have been known to survive the infection. Though the chance of exposure to these amoebae is high, the chance of infection is quite low. It is thought that with global temperatures on the rise, that infections may become more common.
