Myelin Sheath

Postby micco13 » Sat Aug 23, 2008 7:51 am

Hi there,

We are currently studying about nerves/neurons. I heard that messages can travel along a neuron much quicker if we are warming up/exercising ... Does anyone know why this happens and how this is related to myelin sheaths?

My only guess is that because the fatty layer of myelin becomes more fluid (due to temperature increase), and it will somehow increase the rate of impulses being conducted. Maybe it increases the surface area of the axon? Hmm. :?

No. The myelin sheath doesn't let disperse for electric impulses. And the more myelin (the larger diameter of neuron) the faster electric impulses are conducted.
