I need help identifying a plant in my new garden

I found this plant in my garden and I don't know what it is.

It has grown about 18 inches tall. It has one stock and off the stock or leaves about 3 inches long. The leaves are placed about every 3 inches up the stock, randomly.

The flower is very fragrant (flowery). Perhaps like a strong lilac smell.
Toward the top of the stock are flowers.
They are spherical, just smaller than a baseball and round like a baseball.
The sphere itself is made up of little flowers that have 5 petals. I would say again like a lilac but not because lilacs have 4 petals.

I have looked up Agapanthus caulescens and allium but these are not it.

It is not the allium because of the straight stock and lack of leaves up the stock. Also in my reading, these can smell like onions. My flower smells floral.
And it is not the agapathus because of the little tiny flowers that make up the sphere. And again the lack of leaves on the stock.

Oh and did I mention there is more than one sphere on the plant.

Sounds like its a hydrangea to me. They grow about that size before they have their bloom, and they're in flowering season currently.
