Shine dalgarno sequence

Postby georgina009 » Wed Mar 12, 2008 12:07 am

In a E. coli mRna strand what would happen if the shine dalgarno sequence was removed? Would mRNA still be transcribed from the gene? Would protein still be translated?

do you know the role of the Shine-Dalgarno sequence?

If the role is to make something happen, then removal would cause it to not happen?

Consequently, if it has no role in making something happen, then removal would have no effect.

Think of it as a way of controlling how often a baseball pitching machine throws a ball. If there is a Shine-Dalgarno gear in place, the machine throws 100 balls a minute. If you take out the gear, it only throws 10 balls a minute. If each ball represents 1 polypeptide chain, compare the results of running the machine for one minute with and then without its Shine-Dalgarno gear in place.
