O2 consumption

The experiment has to do with a respiometer and peas
How can we measure the amount of O2 consumed during respiration in the vial when another gas (CO2) is produced as a byproduct of cell respiration and it replaces the space that was previously occupied by O2? In other words, how do we solve this problem in order to successfully measure O2 levels?

I think the answer is that the CO2 and KOH(in the bottom of the vial) react with each other and form a solid, but I cant find anything to verify that idea.
