Why do faeces smell?Moderator: BioTeam

Is it possible that after all the microfloral processing in the digestive system, the reason for the smell is to stop other people from eating it? There seems to be a 'disgust' response hard-wired in the human brain.
I recall vividly a David Attenborough program where Gorillas ate their own poo - "it makes a warm meal on a cold day". Mmmm!
I imagine that we have no (or a very limited) behavioural response to the smell of crap - all mammals have smelly faeces.[/i]
