During hyperventilation, a person acquires a rate of respiration higher than that required to maintain a normal partial pressure of CO2 in the blood. With increased ventilation, more CO2 is exhaled, and the reaction below is driven to the left.
CO2 + H2O <-> H2CO3 <-> H+ + HCO3- carbon dioxide + water <-> carbonic acid <-> hydrogen ion + bicarbonate ion Driven to the left, H+ concentration falls, and blood pH rises, resulting in respiratory alkalosis, a condition where systemic arterial blood PCO2 falls below 35mmHg if there is no compensation.
