blue offsprings?

Postby RL543 » Thu May 26, 2005 2:53 pm

In certain families that live in certain ares in Kentucky (U.S. ;) ), a very high frequency of an autozome-recessive genetic flaw was found ; Blue Offsprings.
Their skin looks blue, and they lack the diaphorase enzyme. That enzyme stimulates reactions, that help to keep the noraml shape of the hemoglobin hormone.
When it lacks, the hemoglobin's color turns bluish. The skin of people from a european source - you can see through it the blood colorings that effect the skin's color.
Hence the pinkish color of normal people, and the blue color of the "blue offsprings".

Can you formulate an estimation that will explain why this property is pretty frequent in this group of families, but very rare in the general population??

How many families? If there are many of them it isa possible that they breed between tehmselves and the gene is recessive. Just a thought...

You know, i'm actually from KY (Eastern KY) and I've never seen the blue people, although I have heard lots about them. Also, despite the stereotypes there are plenty of intelligent people from this area as well. I'm positive that the winky smiley wasn't a sarcastic comment on incest in KY. There is Pikeville College in the area and the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine as well. Our biology program has a 98% acceptance rate to professional schools too. Just figured I would throw that stuff in there. lol

Is it all blue or just some parts? In moorish countries having blue blood is considered very good...royalty(it's because their skin is very thin and shows the veins)

Here's a nice site as well. It describes enzyme activities associated with the blue people. I'm actually planning a trip to Troublesome Creek so I will update you guys on what I see there. http://www.people.virginia.edu/~rjh9u/fugate.html

Here's a pic. I've noticed that a lot of sites refer to them as Fugates too. This is because that is the family's last name though. I actually just caught on to something, they are found in Troublesome Creek which is in Hazard, KY. Hazard is only 25 minutes from my house?!?! I'll probably just drive down tomorrow and talk to some locals. http://www.mbhs.edu/~levindan/silverscope/bluepe.png
