3 letters from different profs or researchers you have worked with and can tell how good a student you are.

Letters from professional persons that know your scientific interests and your abilities. They should be able to judge how well you would be able to complete a master's program
Scientists are a friendly, atheistic, hard-working, beer-drinking lot whose minds are preoccupied with sex, chess and baseball when they are not preoccupied with science.

I think he is from Israel it says under is avatar.

Letters of reference are mainly used to try and get an idea of what other people think of you. If references are from people who happen to be in the field of interest then all the better, but not required. So yes it would be good to get some from profs or researchers or the like but it is not necessary.

They (the acceptance committee) know that you most likely do not have any publications or such. So who to use: Do you have a teacher that you know and who knows you? Or if you know or have a family friend that is in the work force, even in say business or holds some managerial position would be helpful. Of course the higher the level the more prestigious the letter will sound.

It's not a problem if they are not in the right field, what is important is that they can judge your abilities. IF they are in academia it is good enough, because whatever the field, the qualities required are ususally the same. So they will be able to talk about your curiosity, independance, ability to analyze and solve problems (or lack of those qualities) etc... And spark the interest for you in the selection comitee.

Sorry,

yes Academia is the world of the scholars (researchers and professors) not only those belongings to any academy. So your professor and lecturers are considered academics.

Good luck with your application. And if you do not have 3 academic references, any professional could also wite a letter as Vagabond told you. What is interesting for selection comitees is how you appear to other peoples.

Since you're coming into an "American-type" system (even in Canada). this might help you to understand how the system works:
