Mitosis - Meiosis? What the heck?can anyone explain in detail (in SIMPLE terms) what is going on these processes, why its done, where, etc. I would REALLY appreciate it as I have an EOC on it on Tuesday.
Thanks
Ok. For Mitosis, the process of somates (non sex-cells) dividing, there are four steps:
Prophase: The chromosomes form paired sets, the nuclear membrane dissappears, and spindles form. Metaphase: The chromosome pairs move to the center of the spindle formations, and separate. Anaphase: The daughter chromosomes move to opposite ends of the spindle. Telophase: The two different groups of chromosomes each have a nuclear membrane formed around them. The rest of the cell splits. Meosis is the process of a gamete (sex cell) dividing. Basically it goes through the process listed above twice, mixing some of the genetic material up...which allows for variation among the resulting cells. I don't have those particular notes with me at the moment, but I will be going home tomorrow and promise to have a more detailed description by tomorrow nite. Kyle
Sorry it took me so long to get back...I HATE Virginia Beach/Norfolk traffic.....
Here is the site that I used to teach me the basics of mitosis...I think it can explain it better than I am able to. http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio ... /main.html Kyle
