Solute potential

Would you say that solute potential is the tendency of a solution to gain water ?

Solute potential is the tendency of water to move from one place to another.

Thanks. So would this definition apply to osmotic pressure as well?

I actually not agree with the answer that given by dipjyoti because solute potential is a potential of solution which enable the water to enter the solution by osmosis due to presence of the solute material. The solute potential is also known as the osmotic potential.

Solute potential:
Pure water has a solute potential (Ψπ) of zero. Solute potential can never be positive - as more solute is added, the solute potential becomes negative. The relationship of solute concentration (in molarity) to solute potential is given by the Van't Hoff Equation:

Ψπ = − miRT
where m is the concentration in molarity of the solute, i is the Van't Hoff factor, the ionization constant of the solute (1 for glucose, 2 for NaCl, etc.) R is the ideal gas constant, and T is the temperature.

Osmotic potential:Please check it from http://www.biology-online.org/dictionar ... _Potential
